About the Series
This conceptual series consists of the presentation and distribution of a new map of the American continent, and the development of public art forms that are dispersed in everyday social spaces and exchanges. While it may be seen as a monument to the epics of migration, its goal is also to critically reflect on the form and function of conventional monuments.

The words “Latino/a” and “America” acquire different meanings depending on the context, and reflect on the deep impact of popular shifts in our culture. The common tie between all of the different versions is the sharing of a new “Latinidad” that extends globally, and is redefining the English speaking world. We are changing what “America” means, and what it means to be “American.”

About the Route Guides / Guías de Ruta:
Premise of this version: In the fall of 2003, the artist gave 40 of these maps
titled Road Maps (#1: Arrival New York), 2003/2006 to 20 individuals he
knew would cross the U.S.-Mexico border. Each person received two maps,
one for them to keep, and one for them to mail back to the artist upon arrival
at their final destination in New York City. The artist has since received 8 maps
in return that show various degrees of exposure to weather as well as wear
and tear.
The Unused Edition (2003) consists of 20 identical, clean, folded maps of the same dimension which have not been used or traveled with.
